Wall Street Journal: Website

Challenges

The Wall Street Journal Weekend Edition wanted to create a website to complement their newly redesigned, smaller format newspaper. The main goal of the site was to position the Weekend Edition as a source for lifestyle information beyond the weekday business reports, ultimately attracting luxury advertisers. Additionally, it needed to be a compelling read, conveying the experience of receiving and reading the print edition.

Strategy
The Wall Street Journal Weekend Edition wanted to create a website to complement their newly redesigned, smaller format newspaper. The main goal of the site was to position the Weekend Edition as a source for lifestyle information beyond the weekday business reports, ultimately attracting luxury advertisers. Additionally, it needed to be a compelling read, conveying the experience of receiving and reading the print edition.

Design
The overall design references the format of the redesigned paper and showcases details and excerpts that reflect the print edition. We created a quadrant navigation on the homepage that dynamically reveals article excerpts from four key lifestyle sections upon rollover. In addition, in order to inspire visitors to look forward to and plan their upcoming weekend with the help of the Weekend Edition, we integrated an Accuweather weekend forecast onto every page.

Success
The Wall Street Journal team loved the way that the design captured the feeling of reading the actual paper, and wished our online experience could be incorporated into the online version of the weekday edition. Perhaps our client said it best: “The website you created for us matched both our spoken and unspoken objectives while beautifully translating our core brand identity from print to online. We appreciate the speed and efficiency with which you helped us pull things together.”
