MSLK Featured in New Design Compilation: Magic Branding

We are honored that our identity system for the Figment Art Festival has been included in the new compilation, Magic Branding, by DesignerBooks. The book features the best in integrated branding systems from around the world and would make the perfect addition to any designer’s bookshelf. We’ll certainly be putting it on ours and will return to it frequently for inspiration.

To me, the use the word “Magic” in the title is ironic. From the client perspective, the design process certainly may seem to have an element of magic in it. We listen closely to a client’s needs, go back to the studio, wave the magic wand, and presto, out pops a brilliant and intuitive solution! Just kidding…

Holiday Windows Recap 2010

I knew even before moving to NYC that the holiday displays along and around 5th Avenue were a must see so I was excited to go out and take the photos for this year’s window recap. And I must say that what I saw exceeded my expectations. The windows were beautiful with an impressive amount of attention to detail. And with so many windows themed around travel and fantasy worlds, I felt as if I was being transported somewhere else just by looking at them.

Sheri L Koetting Interviewed about Social Media

Sheri L Koetting was interviewed by the Guardian Life Small Business Research Institute as a part of their research on small business and social media. Guardian Life investigated which groups of people are more likely to use social media platforms for their small business. In the video, Sheri discusses how we at MSLK use social media for our clients as well as for ourselves. Sheri also discusses what kinds of social media platforms MSLK recommends for our clients as well as why certain groups of people are more likely to use social media than others.

According to the research done by Guardian Life, the groups of business owners more likely to use social media are women, people under age 28, and people whose businesses have less than 10 employees. MSLK stands out from the norm according to this research. While we are a business with under 10 employees, social networks play a large role in our business as we work to integrate social media into our clients’ as well as our own marketing strategies. To read more about the research done by Guardian Life, check out the press release here.

Using Sweepstakes and Contests to Build and Engage your Facebook Fan Base

Having a Facebook page for your business is one thing, but growing your fan base and keeping your fans engaged is another. An easy way to achieve these things is through the use of sweepstakes and contests. We at MSLK did just that and experienced very positive results.

From November 9th thru December 3rd we ran a sweepstakes giving away ten sets of our “Cheers!” Gift Tags. Participants simply had to become a fan of MSLK and provide their name and email address and they were done. Even with such a simple sweepstakes we saw a 13.2% increase in our fan base and nearly a 400% increase in our monthly active users. If MSLK was able to yield such results with a simple giveaway, just think what it could do for your own brand.

MSLK’s App, OTO, is Available for Free on iTunes!

Like many companies, our holiday card is an important opportunity that allows us to connect with our busy clients on a more personal level. Traditionally, we have created high-production print pieces that are fun, functional, and transformable, able to repurposed into new objects. This year was different. With the ever-expanding App market, MSLK decided to create a fun app that would get to be seen and used by anyone with an iPhone or iPod touch throughout the world.

We are thrilled to announce the debut of OTO, a fun iPhone app available for free on iTunes for a limited time. OTO is an incredibly easy-to-use photo app that enables you to take pictures of you and your friends with fun props and graphic overlays. Best of all, these images can be easily shared via email and Facebook.

Print Promotions that Make a Lasting Impression

Marketers are constantly exploring novel ways to reach their customers. How can you get people to notice your brand, buy your product, join your organization, go to your event or become a sponsor? Whatever the case may be, the goal is always the same: reaching your audience in a meaningful way that captures their attention. While your online and social media presence is definitely the most important viral way to engage with your audience, a recent print promotion for the Type Directors Club reminded me of how powerful a unique, well-thought out print campaign can be. Perhaps there is still a bit of room in the marketplace for this type of work. Sometimes it’s exactly what’s needed to make people notice just how great your company or organization is.

So what makes for a spectacular print promotion? I’d say it’s a combination of a unique concept, thoughtful material selection, a healthy dose of graphic wit, and flawless execution.  All of these elements should come together seamlessly to create something that people want to hold on to.

MSLK Creates Plays on Words while Playing with Words

This past weekend, a couple of us at MSLK had the opportunity to take a break from our computer screens and have some fun with words. The Spark Typography Workshop invited participants to use unconventional materials to illustrate ordinary words, and the results were rather “hair raising.”
