Fashion Designers Reimagine the Christmas Tree
Every year, big name fashion designers and architects create Christmas trees to be auctioned off for charity in Paris at the “Les Sapins de Noël des Créateurs” event. The participating designers this year included Louis Vuitton, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Gucci, Stella McCartney and Paul Smith. Zaha Hadid’s tree was the most sought after, fetching 46,000 euros (or about $66,000) at auction. Each tree has its own unique theme, many correspond to the core values of the brand that created it. Not surprisingly, Louis Vuitton created a fully-branded Christmas tree, made from metallic gold logos. It pretty much looks like their classic monogram luggage in tree form.
Gucci also pursued the brand direction. Who needs gifts under the tree, when the gifts are the tree?
Zaha Hadid’s tree looks very Zaha Hadid-y: a white, curvelinear, space-age sculpture.
Norman Foster from Foster + Partners created my favorite tree. The design plays on light and reflection, creating a glowing, red, tree-orb when lit. You can read about the construction about it on their site. Photos courtesy of WWD.
