MSLK and Nolcha Help Launch the Next Top Designer

What does it take to launch a fashion line these days? During New York’s Fashion Week, Nolcha’s Beyond the Runway competition has emerged as a solid platform and a reputable outlet for launching top-tier designers from around the globe.

An award-winning event now in its 9th season, Nolcha provides designers with a venue to display their work with four days of runway shows, an eco-accessory exhibition, fashion business seminars, and networking events.  On the last day, one very lucky designer will emerge as the winner and receive a business support package worth over $50,000 to help him or her succeed as an entrepreneur. This year MSLK and a panel of three other judges from within the fashion industry will be there to help make that selection.

Perhaps you’d like to join us for the fun and festivities. As a judge and sponsor of the event, MSLK has received passes to all the shows and after-parties. Please see the schedule below and RSVP here. Come meet fashion designers and other fashion industry professionals!

Burt’s Bees Skincare Installations Stop Consumers Dead in Their Tracks

If you’re a marketer, you’ve probably thrown around those ubiquitous terms, push and pull marketing. The marketplace has seen a major paradigm shift from pushing products onto consumers, to pulling them in, inviting them to engage with the brand in novel and unique ways. At MSLK, we think this is especially important to consider when creating sophisticated branding campaigns in the beauty industry. How can you stop consumers dead in their tracks, invite an interaction or ignite a conversation? Burt’s Bees skincare installations do just that. In a series of three installations that have traveled to public spaces across Canada, the pieces educate women about the harmful effects of most allegedly natural skincare products on the market.

Snapshots From Barcelona: Street Art

I’ve just returned from an amazing trip: Barcelona, Morocco, and London. An amazing, inspirational treat for all the senses, I managed to take over 2,000 photos.

While in Barcelona, I was on the lookout for street art, having seen the film Exit Through the Gift Shop, about the famed street art master Banksy on the plane ride over. Some of what I saw was true guerrilla-style art, while other was hand-painted advertisements.

In all, these added color to one of Europe’s most vibrant of cities.

Here are a few of my top picks…

Uncomfortable Conversations Opening Night

The opening night for Uncomfortable Conversations on Sunday was a big success. The small gallery space in the Meatpacking District was jam-packed with visitors adding to the intimate uncomfortable vibe of the night. MSLK’s pieces were highly appreciated and initiated a lot of conversations about the design and message. Some people saw the “right” message while others saw the hidden unintended one. This often led to humorous conversations about “you see what you want to see” and “what’s really on your mind”. The question is: what do you see?

MSLK Exhibits “Unintended Communication” at the ICFF

What do you see above? Do you read “click here” or something a little, well… different? If your first read made you blush and feel a little uncomfortable, well that’s exactly what can happen when type is poorly set!

Amid all of the comfortable furniture at The International Contemporary Furniture Fair next week, MSLK and 14 other designers will be sparking some Uncomfortable Conversations at a show of the same name. Conceived by our friends and colleagues at Design Glut and sponsored by Fast Company, the show challenges viewers to step outside their comfort zone and willfully engage in an uncomfortable conversation. As designers we are highly attuned to the unsettling feelings poor design can create, especially poorly set type.

For the show we explore five examples of how careless kerning can lead to unintended miscommunication. If you’re in NYC, please join us for the opening reception on Sunday, May 16th. We expect it to be uncomfortably crowded.
