A Brief Road Tour Through Missouri’s Signage
Last month found me driving across Missouri while visiting relatives. The cold, harsh winter landscape did little to brighten up the drive, save for the amusing signage inviting all travelers to see “America’s Cave: Meramec Caverns!” along with “Jesse James’ Wax Museum!”
My time didn’t allow for any stops, but I couldn’t help but take a few pictures. In stark contrast to the over-the-top designs of 5th Avenue’s windows, these were great in their own very different way.

You missed signs for the Vacuum Cleaner Museum.
Anyway, you have to love the 500 signs for Meramec Caverns. In fact, I think there might actually be something like 500 signs on the way there and back. One year I counted.
And truthfully Meramec Caverns are the originators of any activity on this stretch of road. Before there were signs/billboards, they bought up every barn along the roadside and their message was painted on walls, fences and roofs all along the way.
haha Brilliant, nothing beats the straightforward ad campaigns of the Midwest. “If you were ever a kid..” No market research here, everyone’s a target. Love it!
